There are many theories on how to stop panic attacks. Many people take medication to help with this debilitating problem and although there are certain situations where medication is necessary, for the most part its not. Its important that we understand what actually happens when you have a panic attack. The term panic is what we refer to when we are anxiously fearful and where we don’t quite know what to do. Unlike fear that paralyzes you, anxiety actually does quite the opposite. It makes you act irrationally.

This is actually the “right” response. One of our primal instincts as human beings is the fight or flight response. Fear is built into us and whenever we experience fear there is a trigger in the body that helps to protect you. You can say that the most primordial instinct we have is that of survival and protecting our own lives at all costs.

Whenever this fear response gets triggered the adrenal glands release something called adrenaline. It “turbocharges” your muscles to respond quicker, get stronger and act faster. It can truly give you super human power and in as little as 3 minutes your entire body can be filled with adrenaline.

Obviously this is great when we face life threatening situations but the problem is that in our modern world we have learned to fear the “wrong” things. We have the ability to decide unconsciously what makes us anxious and what we fear. In most cases, panic attacks are brought on by triggers that have absolutely no impact on whether you live or die. The problem is that whether the trigger is life threatening or not, the fear response will be the same in your body and adrenaline will course through your veins as if a lion was chasing you as was the case with primitive man.

While adrenaline can save your life, it does have some major downsides. When you come off the adrenaline high you will feel exhausted. It can also have long term health effects if you have frequent panic attacks.

So, how do we deal with it and how to stop panic attacks before they even happen? Here are a few steps you can follow that can have an immediate impact.

1. Identify the “false” trigger
When the panic reflex gets triggered in your body you will go through the whole process. What triggers the process is almost always a false trigger since very few things in your environment is truly life threatening. Now that you know this, think back at what triggers your panic attacks and see how it was just an association that you made that was false. Being aware of the triggers is very powerful because awareness itself can help you to catch yourself when it happens and immediately use the next step…

2. Interrupt your pattern
When panic gets triggered in your body, you go though a mental pattern of thoughts. You start thinking in a certain way that not only fuels the anxiety but also triggers more thoughts like it. You probably think about the worse possible outcome and you picture all the horrible things that can happen. You need to interrupt the pattern. How? You need to change what you picture in your mind, what you focus on and what you do with your body. Close your eyes and think of something completely different. Scream a silly word at the top of your lungs. Stand on your head, start dancing…do anything to interrupt the pattern. Once you’ve done this you stop the process.

3. Immediately instill a new pattern
Once you’ve broken the pattern you need to create a new once. This will help you to have long term results because by doing this you change the pattern that follows on from the trigger. Whatever you where thinking and picturing in your mind, come up with an alternative that is peaceful, calm and that makes you happy. Picture it as vividly as possible.

4. Practice your new patterns
At first it may be hard to work on these pictures in your mind and on your self talk but its something you need to practice. Practice talking to yourself in a positive way. Tell yourself that all is well and that only good comes your way. Don;t bother with what you actually see on the outside world. Focus on your own inner world and continue to build images of being safe of being happy and of being strong and confident. These empowering inner pictures will help you more than anything else.

In the end, being calm, peaceful and happy is a choice that you can make consciously. Being anxious is a choice that you will “make” unconsciously if you don;t choose the first one consciously. If you want to know how to stop panic attacks you don’t need complicated therapies or dangerous drugs. You simply need to work on yourself and how you see and perceive the world around you. There is a powerful statement that has guided my life and I’m sure it will help you too: “When you change the way you look at things, the things you look at change”.

If you really want to know how to stop anxiety then you will probably be searching far and wide. The truth is that anxiety is a part of life. We all have anxieties, fear and worries. The only real difference is in the way we deal with these. People who suffer from anxiety are not unlucky or dealt a sly hand genetically. Anxiety is a mental disorder and even if you are not formally diagnosed with it, it can be incredibly debilitating. Fear and anxiety can consume your life. It can take over and trap you in a “mental prison” that prevents you from living your life.

The fact that fear and anxiety is a part of life does not mean that we are helpless or that we are a victim of circumstances. In very simple terms, learning how to stop anxiety is all about learning how to look at life in a different way. In an ancient spiritual text it was once noted that “when you change the way you look at things, the things you look at change”. Read that gain and again until you understand it. Its crucial to understand that because your perception of events, circumstances and even memories is responsible for the way you look at the world and your life.

So, what does that have to do with anxiety? If you see the world as a dangerous place full of evil people and accidents waiting to happen then that is what you are “looking for” in your mind’s eye. Because you are looking for it, that is what you will notice and that is what you will experience.

The challenge is that our habitual ways of looking at the world and at life is not something that we consciously choose all the time. Its habitual. Its something that we just do without thinking about it. Events from our past have taught us how to think about certain things.

So, how can we use this to help us stop anxiety? Learning to think in a new way can be tough but the payoff is immense. We usually have anxiety about certain things. The reason why we are anxious about it is usually the result of an event or a series of events. There is almost always a cause and identifying this and changing your thinking about it is a crucial step. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy can help you do just that. With the help of a psychologist you can get to the bottom of these underlying issues and he or she can help you change the way you look at these things.

We are often our own worse enemies when it comes to anxiety and we can quickly create elaborate tales in our minds – and believe them even if they have no real base in reality. A powerful exercise to help you get rid of anxiety is to take a pad of paper and write down the five things that you are most anxious about. Write it out in detail. Then, look at it closely and come up with as many reasons as you can why these are absolute lies. If you have a friend that you can trust, talk to them about it. Let them help you see a new perspective. Fears are almost always self created and we tend to make it much bigger and much worse in our heads. By getting it out there you can see it from a new perspective and see how its absolutely not true.

As an example, you may be very anxious about flying. The mere thought of it can cause you to start feeling the symptoms of an anxiety attack. The truth however is that flying is the safest form of transport. Here are thousands of flights every day – all of them 100% safe and the vast majority of passengers love the feeling of flying. If you think about your own reasons for believing that flying is “dangerous” then you will see that its not factual but fictional.

Apart from dealing with the underlying issues of anxiety you also need to focus on some immediate issues. Learning to relax yourself and learning how to calm down and have a stress free life is crucial. If you are always rushing and stressing then you cannot get rid of anxiety.

I know that there are proponents of medication as a method for how to stop anxiety. I’m not one of them. Ultimately you have to address the real issues and deal with it there. As long as its there no amount of medication will get rid of it. Its not something physical. It exists in your mind and you and only you can get rid of it – root and all!

Living with anxiety can have many detrimental effects on our lives. If you want to know how to relieve anxiety then its important to understand that there are different levels of anxiety. If your anxiety is “bad” to the point where you break down then you really need to get professional help. At that point it is likely to only get worse. For most of us managing anxiety is something that we can do ourselves. In fact, all people have some level of anxiety in their lives. Allowing the anxiety to take over and control you is where the problems start.

The quickest and probably the easiest way to relieve anxiety is through medication. I don’t want to dwell on this because I am actually firmly against using medication in dealing with anxiety. Yes, it can relieve you from the symptoms but the side effects are just not worth it. It far better to focus on strategies that can offer long term solutions and help you to eventually overcome anxiety for good.

Using relaxation techniques is by far the most effective way to relieve anxiety almost instantaneously – and without harmful drugs. Deep and focused breathing can help you relax and prevent the anxiety causing patterns in your body. As simple as it may sound, when you breathe deeply it actually changes the chemistry in your body which is why its so effective in relieving anxiety.

Anxiety is nothing but a mental patterns that runs in your mind. There are certain triggers in your environment that can set it off. This can be very subtle and often happens unconsciously which is why anxiety can be so perplexing. Learning to manage your ind is really important. You need to learn how to interrupt these patterns when they do happen. Experts recommend that you create for yourself a “mental escape” which is a “place” that you create for yourself in your mind. Make this place somewhere you can go to instantaneously. Make it a place that is safe, happy and peaceful. Whenever you feel yourself getting pulled into a mental pattern of anxiety, close your eyes and go to your special place.

This process relies heavily on visualization which is incredibly powerful as a technique to manage your mind and your feelings. In very simple terms, anxiety is caused by anxious thoughts. Similarly, happiness is caused by happy thoughts. If you have to think back at a time in your life when you where very happy, could you do that? How about thinking back at a time when you felt very loved? How about a time when you felt very peaceful?

We all have great memories but its all bout remembering the good stuff instead of the bad. What’s really great about the human mind is that we can create things. With visualization you can create a lot of peace in your life. Remember that ultimately you live your entire life in your mind AND that you are the only one who is in control of your mind.

Keeping your mind focused on peaceful, loving and harmonious thoughts is a habit and its something that you need to cultivate. You do not get rid of anxious thoughts by trying to “remove” them. You do it by focusing on the opposite. You do it by focusing on peaceful, tranquil, loving, kind and peaceful things. The way you get rid of the darkness is through light and you can use that same analogy to eliminate anxiety from your life.

These are just some simple ideas on how to relieve anxiety. If you can you should get some professional help. Whether it be through a program or through therapy it will help you and equip you with the skills to deal with anxiety and eventually eliminate it from your life.

Its estimated that only a third of people who suffer from anxiety seek out help. Most people figure that they just have to “deal with it” which is why the question how to deal with anxiety is a mistake in itself. We need to move away from the idea that we just have to “get by” and learn how to live with the problems. The focus needs to be on being free from anxiety – completely. And it certainly is possible.

Like many mental disorders, its a gradual process by which the problem develops and over time we gradually develop anxious thoughts and mental habits that stick and become “normal” in our everyday lives. Learning to deal with anxiety can take on many different approaches depending on the severity of your anxiety.

Medication:
Lets start by looking at the worse case scenario where you have to take medication. There are a number of drugs that are highly effective in treating the symptoms of anxiety. The emphasis is on the word symptoms because drugs offer no real cure or solution. It can only inhibit the mental and physical symptoms caused by anxiety.

Drugs are expensive, have side effects and can leave you feeling “emotionally dead”. Valium, Xanax and Ativan are some of the most common anti-anxiety drugs while more common anti-depressants are sometimes also used. Anxiety medication should always be the last option and should only be used under close supervision by your doctor. Do not look at this as a long term solution.

Therapy:
If you want to know how to deal with anxiety then the simple answer is that you learn to deal with the issues that causes the anxiety. Logic dictates that when you remove the cause, you remove the effects and the symptoms. This is where therapy comes in. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CTB) is aimed at helping you get to the root cause of the anxieties in your life and then dealing with these issues.

This can be a very effective method but it does take time. It also takes a willingness on your part to actually work on yourself and make the necessary changes.

CTB is not the only treatment to deal with anxiety. Relaxation techniques offer solutions that are effective almost immediately. One of the best ways to simply deal with anxiety is to learn how to relax and calm down when you start going into an anxious state of mind. Muscle exercises along with mental imagery can help you relax and break the mental patterns that causes anxiety.

Along with relaxation techniques you can also explore meditation and Yoga. Both are anxiety spiritual practices that can have a profound effect on your mental and emotional state of mind.

Lifestyle:
Lifestyle is perhaps the most overlooked aspect of learning how to deal with anxiety. Both your work and home life can be a source of immense stress and excess stress often leads to anxiety related problems. Stress relief is incredibly important and finding ways to release stress in your life will help you relief a lot of the anxiety you may suffer from.

Make time for things that you love to do. Whether its going out with friends or whether its playing a sport, make sure that you take time for yourself. A holiday or a weekend away can do wonders for your mind and spirit and help you gain some fresh perspective about life.

Diet and exercise is also a bit piece of the puzzle. The connection between our physical and mental health is undeniable. The foods you eat have a massive impact on the way you feel physically and emotionally and they usually go hand in hand.

Daily exercise and a balanced diet will help you manage stress and is known to promote sound mental health.

Learning how to deal with anxiety is not about finding the right pill to cure you overnight. It really boils down to dealing with the emotional issues that you may have developed (unconsciously) over a long time. Whether its learning some basic relaxation techniques, taking up meditation or using a guided therapy program – make sure that you deal with it and claim the life that you want to live!
.

Natural anxiety relief is bring new hope for millions of people. Many of us are suffering from general anxiety disorder. You know you can feel anxious at times and it’s quite normal but if you are getting anxious, nervous or uneasy for no apparent reason, then that’s already an anxiety disorder. Although technically, anxiety that’s not normal is not really considered that serious, there are cases that it can be life-threatening.

For instance, what if you are driving in the middle of the road and had an anxiety attack? What if you are at the beach swimming? What if you are climbing up a steep hill? Those are just few of the cases wherein you need to get angst out of your system as soon as possible.

There are ways that you can try to lessen (if not eliminate) anxiety attacks. You can always go for prescribed medications. However, if you are someone who believes in the natural method of treating things, then you will choose those options for natural anxiety relief. Here are the things that you can try:
.

1) Relaxation exercises.
These types of exercises can really provide natural anxiety relief. Have you heard about breathing exercises? You can try that every time you feel that an anxiety attack is on its way or if it is happening at the moment. Aside from that, you can pat the area between your cheekbones and your eyes using your fingertips. Do that a few times. If you have a certain “stress ball”, you can also make use of that. All you have to do is squeeze the ball several times until you feel that your anxiety level has gone down. You can also twiddle your thumbs if those other relaxation exercises don’t work for you.

2) Certain herbs and natural remedies.
Have you tried those herbal remedies to relieve anxiety such as Passion flower, Valerian, Kava and Lavender? If not, perhaps it’s about time you make use one of those as your natural anxiety relief. Just try one at a time and see which of those herbal remedies has effectively helped relieve your anxiety. It’s also recommended to sniff green-apple scents whenever you are experiencing an attack. You can buy the actual green apple or collect products with green-apple scents like bath soaps, candles and air fresheners.

3) Mind techniques.
How about joining a yoga retreat with some of your friends? Meditation can be a cool way to treat your anxiety disorder or if not, provide relief. Some say that mind techniques are pretty much helpful in normalizing one’s anxiety. Visualization may help as well. You can visualize that the symptoms of an anxiety attack like nervousness and difficulty of breathing are just clouds above you and all you have to do is think about pushing those clouds at the top. Keep pushing until it can’t be seen anymore like a balloon that has flown away.

4) Massage therapy.
A simple massaging of your head can help ease the anxiety that you are feeling. If you want to and if you can afford it, you can schedule for a regular massage at your favorite spa. For those who are short in funds, you can massage some parts of your body during a hot bath.

You can find many more ways, items and strategies that you can use as natural anxiety relief if you just make an effort to search online. Researching with the use of other resources like print media (books, journals, magazines, etc.) is also recommended.

You don’t have to buy prescribed medications if your anxiety disorder is not really that serious. You can first try some relaxation techniques for anxiety. Who knows? Those techniques may just be what you need to calm your nerves down and take your anxiety levels down a few notches. Moreover, relaxation techniques has its known benefits such as lowered heart rate, reduced muscle tension, lowered blood pressure and reduced perspiration. But of course the ultimate benefit that you can get from relaxation techniques is the feeling of calmness despite that will help minimize anxiety attacks.

One particular relaxation technique that everyone is so familiar with is those deep breathing exercises. These exercises are a good start and can be done with variations. You can go for a deep slow breathing. Take notice of the way you breathe. Focus on hearing the sound and feeling the air that’s coming out of your nose. It’s like there’s nothing else in the world that exists but your breathing. Inhale, exhale and repeat the routine until your nerves have calmed down. There are other deep breathing exercises or similar routines that you can try aside from the one mentioned. Search for details online or through books and magazines.

Are you looking for relaxation techniques for anxiety? Why don’t you try indulging yourself in a hot bath or warm shower while listening to slow, rhythmic music? This relaxation technique is what a lot of people are doing especially after a stressful day. Perhaps you are already aware that stress is a triggering device for anxiety attacks. Reducing stress through the combination of slow music and hot bath can also minimize a person’s anxiety levels. This may not completely cure one’s anxiety disorder but it can help prevent the attacks from coming more often. How about including a sweet, aromatic scent when taking that hot bath or giving some parts of your body a quick massage while enjoying your warm shower?

It won’t hurt to try some meditation classes. This is another relaxation technique that can aid in normalizing your anxiety levels and perhaps getting rid of your anxiety disorder altogether. You can also try yoga. It’s up to you if you enroll yourself in classes and learn the routine with others or just hire your own yoga trainer. In most cases, the latter is more expensive than the former but each option has its own benefits and drawbacks that you should think about. This is why a lot of folks are into yoga and meditation these days.

Focusing your thoughts on a single object perhaps a pen or a picture may also help in calming your nerves every time an anxiety attack is imminent. You can also do focusing from time to time to decrease the level of anxiety in your body that’s beyond normal. Channeling fear, panic, angst and nervousness that you are feeling into writing is one of the useful relaxation techniques for anxiety as well. Just write down your thoughts and emotions on paper. Keep on writing and writing. Never mind the grammar, the spelling or if what you are writing makes sense. Just write it down.

Come to think of it. These relaxation techniques are pretty much simple to do and there’s no reason for you not to try them. However, if your anxiety disorder is really that serious and can’t be relieved or treated by relaxation techniques alone, consider consulting your trusted physician.

Its been said that all therapy is self help since no therapist or no person can make decisions “for you” or change your mind “for you”. Self help anxiety treatments is no different. In the end its something you have to own and something that you have to take responsibility for yourself. The biggest challenge however is to get to that point and for most of us this is almost impossible on our own. We tend to be blinded by our own mistakes and our dis-empowering habits can keep us paralyzed from taking the actions we need to take.

Self help anxiety treatments can be a great help. Not only does it help us remove the blinkers we are walking around with, but it can give us the necessary help to take action and to “see” what we need to see. One of the greatest authors in the field of mental science, Thomas Troward once said that “When you correct your mind, everything else falls in place.”

Keep that in mind. It’s a vitally important principle in your journey to overcome anxiety. Its all about correcting your mind and self help anxiety can help you do just that.

The idea of going to a therapist and spending weeks on a coach is most certainly not the most efficient way to overcome anxiety. In fact, it can actually make the problem worse as progress is so slow that you will probably give up before you make the change. Self help anxiety programs can be extremely effective because you can work at your own pace and if you consider the massive financial implications of traditional treatments then this is most certainly something you should look into.

With the internet and interactive computer technology, self help anxiety programs have become very effective. Going though the exercises and even participating on online focus groups can help you overcome anxiety really quickly. Connecting with others who share your pain and connecting with others who already defeated anxiety can also be a major benefit for using a self help anxiety program.

Today, there are many good self help books on anxiety and many of them can be transformative. There are also several audio programs and online you will find countless self help anxiety courses you can take. One of the most popular and most successful online programs is Panic Away and its helped millions of people get their lives back together. I would strongly encourage you to check out some of the online anxiety self help courses. Not only will it help you overcome this dis-empowering condition but it will empower you to live life to the full and regain your passion and vigor for life.

With so many anxiety cures out there its like a mine field trying to find something that actually works. Right off the bat I will say that I am NOT a supporter of “chemical” treatments and I don’t believe that drugging someone will ever provide a cure for something that ultimately cannot be cured by pills.

One of the hardest steps to take in curing anxiety is to realize that YOU need to confront this issue and not look for a cure in a bottle or with someone else. Its something you need to work on and OUTGROW as a person. When you do this is will be one of the most empowering experiences of your life. So, which anxiety cures actually work? Lets briefly look at 3 of the most effective techniques.

1. Mind-Body Relaxation Techniques
If you have anxiety then you don’t know how to relax our mind. Simple as that. We all know how to relax our bodies, but very few people know how to relax and empty their minds. When you learn to relax your mind you gain perspective and anxiety cannot exist in a relaxed mind.

2. Therapy
The word therapy usually conjures up some negative images for many of us – usually the picture of lying on a shrink’s coach comes to mind. However, modern therapy has taken on a new face and along with it better results. Self therapy can be extremely effective and many self help programs can guide you though every step of the process. The best thing about self therapy is that you can go at your own pace and at a fraction of the cost of traditional therapy it’s a very viable option.

3. Exercise
One of the least practiced and probably most effective anxiety cures is controlled exercise. Did you know that during exercise your brain undergoes significant changes. It releases endorphins into your bloodstream which makes you “feel good”. Exercise is also a great way to relieve stress – a major cause of anxiety.

The best approach is probably to combine several of these techniques. Not only will it give you much faster results but it will re-energize your life. Anxiety cures need not be expensive or drawn out. Its something that YOU can overcome and all you need to do is to tap into the immense power of your mind.

While most remedies for anxiety comes in a brown bottle these days some doctors and health professionals are starting to see the light. Treating mental disorders with medication is a practice that’s long been seen as the “best solution” but recent studies concluded that the exact opposite is necessary.

The mind-body connection has long been known to doctors but only recently did research catch on to provide conclusive proof of this fact. One thing is for sure and that is that the future of curing mental illness does not lie a bottle but in your own mind. This is exactly where the uncommon remedies for anxiety come in simply because they do not rely on drugging yourself into submission.

On a very fundamental level, anxiety is nothing but a mismatch in your perceptions. Your subconscious mind does not reason like your conscious mind and therefore it often gets wired up the wrong way. When you start wiring up the wrong experiences and consequences you can start to create beliefs and even convictions about things that aren’t true.

Having anxiety about anything in your life is simply the result of mismatched beliefs. When your mind starts believing that X will create Y then no matter what you do, when X comes along you will expect Y – even if it’s totally untrue or fictitious.

The easiest way then to rewire your mind is to start scrambling and changing these subconscious beliefs. In itself it is not difficult but if you are anxious the mind is in a constant frenzy and not open to new suggestions and new perceptions.

This then is where the power of relaxation and meditation comes in. Yogi’s and spiritual masters have long been known for their serenity, their sense of calm and total control over their minds. This is no coincidence because the aim of meditation is to relax the mind and in doing so you gain control.

As fluffy as it may sound, the true power of the mind is in silence and being calm is the first step to total control. As a remedy for anxiety, relaxation techniques is very powerful and possibly the fastest way to regain control of your mind. Yoga has similar benefits and Tai Chi and other forms of meditation has immense benefits that we are yet to discover to its full extent.

In theory anything that relieves stress will help you overcome anxiety and learning to “let go” is the real secret. Meditation can help you to see life from a different perspective and to get in touch with who you really are. Anxiety as a “thing” does not exist. It’s created by you and you and only you can uncreate it.

Almost any anxiety disorder treatment these days rely on some form of drug. It seems like we’ve become a society of pill poppers where we use chemicals to control and “fix” virtually every thing in our lives. Although medication do have a place, the common practice of using pills to fix our minds is just ludicrous.

The way most anxiety treatments work is basically to numb your mind to the point where you feel nothing. For some people who are gripped by severe anxiety this might seem like a way to cope, but the truth is that it only puts a lid on the problem and can’t provide any long term cure.

Scientists, doctors and even patients are gradually starting to see the real power of alternative treatments. A recent study revealed some startling new facts about anxiety disorder treatment. Alternative treatments that revolve around relaxation and meditation was put head to head against traditional medicine and in all the cases, the mediation and relaxation techniques did better than the medicine.

The obvious benefit is that you won’t have any of the array of side effects to deal with, but even more important is the implications of treating the mind without pills. Those who underwent the meditation and relaxation therapy reported several other benefits that no one anticipated.

People reported that they felt much less stressed, slept better and had much more energy and zest for life. The people on the medication reported the exact opposite. Those on the mediation treatment also reported that their family life improved and that they generally felt a much greater sense of purpose in life – in sharp contrast to the other group whose sense of self was on a sharp decline because of the chemicals in the medication that numbed their minds.

Although y may think that meditation and relaxation is all airy fairy stuff, think again. At least check it out. You don’t have to become a new age guru to use any of these treatments. Yes, mediation do have a spiritual connection but it is really much beyond that. It’s about reconnecting with that highest part in yourself that is the source of immense strength.

So, how can you get started? I recommend you check out transcendental meditation. It’s commonly believed to be the most profound for of mediation and those anxiety sufferers who practiced this experienced immense benefit. Relaxation techniques can be as simple as dedicating quiet time with music, but guided imagery and more formal relaxation techniques will probably help you more. Yoga is also an excellent way anxiety disorder treatment and the breathing techniques can be very therapeutic.

Lastly, if you are a hard core skeptic then you might need something like biofeedback therapy – where you can actually see how your mind affects your body and vice versa. With this therapy you learn to slow down your heart rate and control your mind and body with various biofeedback equipment. So, even if you don’t believe in the airy fairy meditation stuff you can still benefit from the anxiety disorder treatment of the future.
